I have earned seven awards for teaching excellence, including three for Executive MBA teaching, and been cited repeatedly in Business Week’s Guide to MBA Programs. The MBA Class of 2007 bestowed the Gerald Barrett Faculty Award for my teaching and service contributions to that class. Service contributions have also been recognized at the school and university level with the 2009 Roy E. Holsten Award for Service and the Chancellor’s 2008 Award for Excellence in Public Service.
I was a frequent speaker in management development programs at UNC – Kenan-Flagler Business School. I organized highly successful seminars on financial management and cost control methods for Navy SES, flag officers, and Marine general officers, for Army SES and general officers, for senior officers and enlisted leaders in the U.S. Air Force, and for the Senior Executive Service of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
I was an advisor to the U.S. Navy on shipbuilding and aviation acquisition programs for seven years. I received the Navy’s Superior Public Service Award (the Navy’s second highest civilian award) for these efforts in March 2016. I also taught financial management to HR managers in many firms across the globe for a decade through a joint program with the Society for Human Resource Management, and in programs for Lowes and Kroger.
I was an early pioneer with University Access in developing combined television-internet courses for undergraduate and MBA students. My microeconomics and macroeconomics courses were in nationwide distribution through PBS and each has won three national awards for excellence in higher education distance learning.
I was the founding Director of the Capital Markets Lab in the Kenan-Flagler Business School with responsibility for transforming the finance curriculum to incorporate sophisticated financial information and computational technology.
I have also served as Director of Information Technology and Learning Innovation at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Beyond real estate, finance, and economics, I have a keen interest in playing and acquiring really nice, high-end guitars, particularly archtops. I own over a dozen guitars including a stunning Gibson Le Grand, a very nice Gibson Wes Montgomery L-5, a Gibson Country Gentleman, a Gretsch 6210 Koa model, a Gretsch Black Falcon, a Les Paul Supreme Gold-Top, a wonderful Martin D-42, and an exquisite Taylor 914-CE. I am fortunate enough to own a custom-built black and gold paisley Telecaster and a custom-built blue paisley Stratocaster made by the incomparable Bill Crook (http://www.crookcustomguitars.com/).
From December 2005 through late 2013, I ran a substantial outreach effort to soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines serving in dangerous, rustic locations in Iraq and Afghanistan. That effort, supported by colleagues, students, neighbors, friends, and family, shipped over 14 tons of care packages (well over 2100 boxes in all). Many colleagues, students, neighbors, friends, and family combined to made it possible to support Marines, soldiers, sailors, and airmen deployed in harm’s way in Iraq and especially Afghanistan. I have been recognized with honorary membership in three Army regiments, and have attended several Medal of Honor ceremonies for awardees in units that were recipients of care packages.
